Elemi essential oil, Canarium luzonicum

Does this resin look a bit familiar?

Elemi essential oil, Canarium luzonicum

Extracted by steam distillation of the gum resin of the Pili tree. A tropical tree native to Bicol, Philippines and the Moluccas Islands.

As a species of the Burseraceae family, as are Frankincense and Myrrh, the aroma and spiritual applications of Elemi are similar to the sacred incense resins of those trees as well. The essential oils of all three of these trees are known to be purifying to the body and spirit.

The name Elemi comes from an Arabic phrase meaning ‘as above, so below’, which tells of its action on the emotional and spiritual planes.

The Pili tree can grow up to 115 feet tall. As it sprouts leaves, which can grow up to one foot long, the tree exudes a pale yellow resin.

Extraction: The resin is tapped from the wild trees and is harvested sustainably, so as not to harm the trees.

Aroma: spicy citrus, woody, balsamic. Medium strength

Perfumery:  middle note, can be used as a fixative

Color: pale to dark yellow

Consistency: thin

Historically, Egyptians used elemi in their aromatic embalming blend.

The tree grows in extremes of dry heat and torrential rains. The more it is battered by winds the more abundant and lovelier is the crop yield. This is an interesting correlation to how Elemi oil increases our body’s resilience to environmental stress.

It has been used in the Philippines for hundreds of years incorporated into ointments for body aches, soothing over exerted muscles and for healing skin conditions.

Today, Elemi is found in skin care formulations to tone and firm the skin, thus reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.  It normalizes the skin’s oils, whether the skin is dry or oily. It is known for helping to shrink pores and support a balanced even complexion, while maintaining a good hydration level of the skin.

This makes Elemi ideal for all skin types.  Elemi is an ingredient in Garden of Eve Facial Cleansing Nectar, a cream cleanser formulated to be beneficial for all skin types.
