Lemongrass, Cymbopogon citratus

Lemongrass essential oil,

Derived from two distinctly different species of Cymbopogon.

Cymbopogon Citratus (known asWest Indian) is native of Sri Lanka. It is now cultivated all over the world. The major producers are Guatemala, Madagascar, Comoros Islands, Brazil Malaysia and Vietnam.     

Cymbopogon flexuosus (known as East Indian) isnative of India. Now India being the major producer.

Both are perennial plants.

Botanical Family:  Poceae or Gramineae respectively.

Extraction: steam distillation of the leaves of the plant.

Color: pale or bright yellow, thin consistency

Description: Grows in dense clumps that are 6 feet high and 4 feet wide tufted bright green grasses with stiff stems that rise from a short rhizome rootstock.  It is native to tropical regions such as India, where it has been used as a medical herb for hundreds of years. In Asia it is commonly used in cuisine for meat and vegetable dishes. In Africa and South America it is popular as a tea.

The leaves can also be used as a source of cellulose and paper production.

Historically it has been used to treat fevers, inflammation, indigestion and as a sedative.

Lemongrass is also known for its aspect of purification.

Known for its many varied uses:

As aromatherapy for muscle pain, calming and lifting energy.

Culinary: It is a delicious citrusy seasoning for soups, as well as a lovely mild flavored tea. 

Cosmetic: used in products for it physical and aromatic benefits.

Nutritionally: It is a source of vitamins A B’s and C, and essential minerals.

Health Benefits:

Topically: to kill bacteria, ward off insects and reduce body aches.

Internally: to help the digestive system.

Pain relief: relieves headaches, stomach ache, muscle and abdominal pain. It is immediately effective for easing night cramps that come on suddenly, pulled muscles and tendons.  Massaging it into the scalp can relieve headaches.

Reported to detox the digestive system, liver, kidneys, bladder and pancreas. It acts as a diuretic assisting to flush toxins. It will also help to reduce inflammation and fever.

A tonic for the nervous systems helping to cure nervous disorders such as shaking limbs, nervousness and vertigo. It also serves as a tonic for all the body systems, the respiratory, digestive and excretory. As it helps nutrients to be absorbed it serves to strengthen the entire  immune system.

It is an antioxidant that fights free radicals inhibiting the growth of cancer cells, especially early on, and is important for the prevention of skin cancer.

Skin Care: Effective in cleansers for all skin types, but possibly irritating to some. It is antiseptic and astringent thereby being beneficial for acne and oily skin. Its’ drying effect will not over dry the skin, so over production of oils will not be stimulated. It is also effective for oily hair and scalp. Lemongrass can also strengthen skin tissue.  

It is an effective bug repellent for people and pets e.g. mosquitoes, flies, ants and fleas.

Lemongrass is a great wake up essential oil, particularly for those who tend to lag in the morning.

Emotional, mental spiritual benefits: said to be the oil of energetic cleansing i.e. in clearing energy of a home, letting go of negative energy helpful to those feeling stuck, heavy or low.

When I cleared and cleansed my new home, prior to moving in, I instinctively washed all the floors, walls, ceilings and closets with lemongrass essential oil diluted in water. On move in day I was struck by the impact of the crystal clear purity of the energy of my home. I continue to enjoy cleaning and clearing energy with lemongrass essential oil. It is one of my favorite essential oils.

Safety Cautions:

As with all essential oils it is best to patch test the skin for sensitivity. Some people more than others may find it to irritate the skin. Do not use around the eyes.

It may lower blood glucose. It is contraindicated for people taking medications for diabetes, hypertension, or hypoglycemia.

It is not recommended for children, Pregnant or nursing mothers.

Those with liver, kidney disease, as well as other diseases must use caution and consult their health care professionals.
